Artist James Thomas Watkins is best known for his paintings of flowers and figurative works, abstract art and photography.
Also known as J. Thomas Watkins, T.W. , Tom Watkins and Tommy Watkins, the artist was born in Oneonta, Alabama in1943. He has had studios in Atlanta, GA, Cincinnati, OH, Ft. Wright, KY and currently works & resides in Athens, GA.
"Folk Surrealism" is the best description of the artist's style. He is best known for his paintings of flowers and figurative works as well as photography.
Although self-taught, Watkins studied briefly with Russian born artist, Roman Chatov (1900-1987) in Atlanta, GA in 1973. He was also well acquainted with several artists from the early 20th century including Cincinnati artist Reginald Grooms (1900-1989), West Virginia artist Grace Martin Taylor (1903-1995) and Ohio sculptor Robert Koepnick (1907-1995). Watkins particularly admires the work of Kentucky artist, Henry Faulkner whose folk influence is visible in his paintings. .
Watkins' works have been featured and sold at various exhibitions, galleries, shows and auctions and are part of many private collections.

The artist owned and operated the J. Thomas Watkins Antiques and Art gallery on 4th Street, Cincinnati in the 1980's.
Watkins is also a keyboardist who released a gospel album (Jesus Lifted Me) in 1978 which was produced by Grammy winner, Phil Driscoll.
Known as "Little Tommy Watkins on the Big Hammond Organ", he spent years traveling on the road, playing the B3 Hammond organ for several preachers. Those experiences took him from tent revivals in the 1960's to large arenas in the 70's & 80's.
Watkins continues to paint at his studio in Athens, Ga at 81 years of age.
